2nd XI promoted but fall short of championship win

With promotion already secured, the 2nd XI fell agonisingly close to winning the AWSCL division 3 title at the last game of the season. Going in to the final round on top of the League, it all boiled down to a winner takes all showdown, away at second place Bolton Villas.

After bowling the hosts out for 138, with Dom Grimes taking 4-27 off 10, Oliver Musgrave’s side looked a little nervy, before a gutsy middle order stand between Daniel Shiels (14) and Forrest Hamilton (24) gave Rhydding hope. However, once the partnership was broken, wickets tumbled, before the final pairing of Andrew Jennings (15) and Sam Tattersall (12) came within seven runs of a famous victory and glory, before Tatts edged one.

Congratulations to the League winners, Bolton Villas, who we look forward to playing again next season in Division 2. And despite the disappointment on the day, let’s remember that this represents ‘Mission Accomplished’ for the 2s, securing promotion back to the second tier at the first time of asking – Our pre-season objective – Done.
