Phil Hughes' passing marked by the Club

November 30, 2014

BRCC joined the global cricketing community in mourning the loss of Australia’s Phil Hughes last week.  The tragedy has touched all involved in this much loved and unique game of ours, with cricketing professionals, fans and club cricketers from all corners of the planet keen to make their own small tributes.

The Club held a small ceremony at 10.30 on Sunday 30th November, with a dozen or so members gathering to hear a few words from Club President, Frank Taylor, who lead the tribute by talking about the loss to the cricketing world, how the tragic news has been felt by us all, along with a brief nod to the last time the Club created a formal memorial - when we lost one of our own, Nick Sheard.

The score board showed Phil Hughes’ Test Match number, one day shirt number and his final score, in front of which many of the members present placed their bat and cap, to support ‪#‎putoutyourbats, where people across the globe are publishing photos of their bat and cap on social media sites, as their own personal tribute.  Later that day, a member of Addingham Cricket Club added their own bat and cap to the memorial, in a touching gesture of mutual mourning from across the local community.

A number of club members also took to social media in an attempt to somehow express their own shock and grief, whilst also offering their support to those closest to the events surrounding the untimely passing of a hugely talented young man, whilst playing the game he loved.
